In 2024, FreediveSafe Hawaiʻi proudly hosted the Hawaiʻi Diver Ho‘olaule‘a at La’i’opua 2020, a community gathering that brought together divers, spearfishers, families, and ocean enthusiasts to celebrate our shared connection to the sea. The event was created to honor Hawaiʻi’s ocean traditions while highlighting the importance of safety, sustainability, and community in freediving and spearfishing.

The day featured a vibrant mix of activities, from safety demonstrations and educational booths to family-friendly throw net games and cultural sharing. Divers and community members had the chance to connect with experts, explore resources, and learn how to keep themselves and their ʻohana safe while enjoying Hawaiʻi’s waters. One of the highlights was seeing keiki and kūpuna together, celebrating the role of the ocean in our lives and the ways we can protect one another while practicing these traditions.

We are thrilled that the Hawaiʻi Diver Ho‘olaule‘a was broadcast statewide on OC16, allowing the excitement and spirit of the event to reach homes across the islands. Sharing this event on television helped amplify the message that safety and sustainability are at the heart of our diving culture. Mahalo to everyone who joined us, supported the vision, and helped make the 2024 Hawaiʻi Diver Ho‘olaule‘a a success.

A huge mahalo nui to the 24 partners who supported this event at La’i’opua 2020!
