FreediveSafe! Hawaii Promotes Spearfishing Safety at Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Moloka‘i Hoe

This past weekend, FreediveSafe! Hawaii had the incredible opportunity to promote spearfishing safety at the finish line of two of Hawaii’s most iconic paddling events: Na Wahine O Ke Kai and the Moloka‘i Hoe, sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines.

As the world-class paddlers crossed the finish line, we were there to engage with their ‘ohana (families), supporters, and visitors, sharing crucial information about freediving and spearfishing safety. These events draw thousands of spectators from across the islands and beyond, making them the perfect place to raise awareness about safe practices in our waters.

Volunteers from FreediveSafe! Hawaii spoke with attendees about the importance of buddy systems, proper training, and recognizing the risks of freediving and spearfishing. Many visitors were eager to learn about the safety drills we recommend, such as surface rescue techniques and blackout recovery, and how this awareness education is saving lives.

Beyond just sharing tips, we were inspired by the community’s enthusiasm and respect for the ocean. Just as paddlers honor the power of the open sea, spearfishers must respect their limits and prioritize safety—not only for themselves but for their dive buddies.

Events like Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Moloka‘i Hoe are more than athletic competitions—they are opportunities to connect with the broader ocean-loving community. By engaging with paddlers and supporters, FreediveSafe! Hawaii hopes to foster a culture of safety and awareness that extends to every corner of our islands’ waters.
